Choosing The Right Agent

How to Choose a Real Estate Agent

Real estate agents seem to grow on trees. Everyone can list off a few agents from their cousin to the “nice lady” they talk to at the local coffee shop. But choosing the right agent is a critical element to having a successful transaction. Experience and expertise vary widely from agent to agent, so how can you choose the right person for your needs?

  • Ask for Referrals – Yes, everyone knows an agent, but asking someone with a recent transaction is the best way to find a good agent.
  • Do Your Research – Fortunately the Internet makes it very easy to do some research. Check local sites like Yelp, Zillow or Google to see what customers say. (We are proud of our reviews so check away).
  • Be sure to understand what they will do to market your home – Marketing is important and the right strategy is key to getting a home sold. Lack of marketing is one of 3 reasons a home doesn't sell.
  • Ask the Right Questions – The agents should be able to discuss their marketing plan for a home sale and offer their process for home buyers, including lenders, home inspectors and escrow.

Remember that the right agent is not always the one who tells you what you want to hear. Listen carefully for how they answer your questions. Experience matters when there are challenges in a real estate transaction (and there are always challenges).

My husband and I want to well our home, but we've never done this before and could use some help. Your article had some great tips for choosing a real estate agent that could help us with this process, and I liked how you said to hire someone that is able to discuss their marketing plan for a home sale and offer their process for home buyers. Thanks; we'll keep this in mind when choosing a real estate agent to help us shop for a home. http://www.brucegates.net/
