It's free to walk, parking fills by 9 a.m. in summer, and there is something about that specific stretch of water — the pelicans, the early fishermen, the horizon — that earns its reputation as one of the better ways to start a day in South Florida.

In August, you go early. Sunrise is around 6:45 this time of year, and an hour on the beach before the heat takes over gives you the whole day. We're always surprised by the regulars — the same faces every Saturday, same spot, same routine. That's what 10 years here looks like.
